The Client
Medway Council is a UK council responsible for the areas of Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Rainham, and Strood. Medway's economy is valued at £4.8bn, with a growth rate surpassing the rest of the UK. Their office, a large 5-story building located near the River Medway at the mouth of the Thames estuary, posed significant challenges due to its size and complexity.

The Products We Used
We were tasked with fully upgrading the lighting on all floors of the building, using bespoke LED fittings. The majority of these were designed and manufactured by Contrac Lighting, based in Goole. However, to reduce costs, we also used more economical Kosnic fittings where necessary.
Contrac fittings:
4-Sided Office Pod Type A
2-Sided Office Pod Type B
1-Sided Office Pod Type C

Challenges We Faced
The open-plan design of the offices required custom-made LED fittings. Many of the existing lights were outdated fluorescent models, some of which were non-functional or non-compliant, making the upgrade more complex. Additionally, as this was a live working environment, we had to minimize disruption to the staff by adhering strictly to the schedule.
What We Did & How We Overcame the Challenges
We collaborated directly with Medway Council’s energy solutions partner, SSE, to carry out a full site survey, analysis, specification, and installation. We coordinated every phase of the lighting upgrade to ensure smooth delivery.
To tackle the building’s unique layout, Contrac Lighting developed bespoke fittings tailored specifically for the project. To minimize disruption to the staff, we worked closely with the on-site facilities team to create a carefully timed delivery schedule, ensuring the project was executed efficiently and with minimal interference.
